The Mystique of Addiction

The meaning of addiction has been hotly debated among many researchers and practitioners in the mental health and substance abuse fields.  While many maintain that addiction has biological roots, others maintain that it is largely a psychosocial problem.  From a neuroscientific standpoint, certain brainwave patterns have been detected in the brains of those individuals who suffer from drug and/or alcohol addiction.  But are those brainwave patterns the result of psychological, social, and environmental causes, or were those brainwave patterns existent before the person developed an addiction?  This, indeed, is a perplexing question, and the ramifications of a response to this question are significant.  If addiction is biological in origin, then the pharmaceutical industry should be able to find the answer.  If addiction is largely a psychosocial problem, the problem is of such a complexity because there are so many factors that play a role in the psychosocial experience of an individual.  Unfortunately, we all know the adverse consequences addiction has on the individual's family, social, and work life.  But could these aspects of life be driving the individual's addiction?  After all, do not affected individuals say that life becomes so much easier after a drink or two or more?  How many times have we heard individuals say that they feel they need a drink because they feel they deserved it after a hard week?  These are all questions that must be answered on an individual basis, especially by those in recovery.

Preparing for your Driver's License Restoration Hearing

Your attorney can best advise you on the relevant documentation you will need for your hearing.  I cannot stress the importance of documenting regular support group attendance.  There are several support groups, such as AA and SMARTRecovery, that you can attend.  Regular community involvement, such as regular church attendance, is also a plus. Your attorney can best advise you on the laws regarding required abstinence.  Before you attend your hearing, you must provide a substance abuse evaluation that addresses your substance use history, your progress in recovery, and your prognosis for continued recovery.  You are also required to obtain a 10-panel drug screening before you attend the clinical substance abuse evaluation interview at which pertinent information regarding your history will be gathered.  Several assessments/inventories will also be administered.  These will assist in determining how well you are progressing in your recovery and your prognosis is for abstinence and relapse.  The results of these tests are included in your substance abuse evaluation.

If you have any questions about the process, please do not hesitate to contact us at 248-470-8918 or at gomeztreatment@gmail.com

Treatment Approach

Addiction involves much more than the use of substances.  It is an experience that must be explored, so that the individual can gain insight into its psychological, social, and environmental causes.  Once the individual begins this process, the individual can more readily detect patterns of behavior that trigger substance use, so that he or she is able to prevent relapse from re-occurring.  Since this a learning process, it is important for the individual to realize that mistakes will happen in recovery.  Most importantly, the individual must learn to take recovery in part acts, as it is a life-long endeavor.  We encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns about beginning treatment in our program.  We can be reached at 248-470-8918 or gomeztreatment@gmail.com
